Liam’s Birth Story

We posted updates when I was in labor, but I wanted to write down the whole story of Liam’s birth day.

I was supposed to be induced at 7:30am on June 1st, 2016, but the hospital called at 5:20 to tell me that all the rooms were full and they would let me know later when they had availability. This was nice in the sense that we got to go sleep a bit more and have breakfast with Maya, but it also left us pretty anxious waiting for that call. I knew my doctor was doing an afternoon surgery so I was worried that they might push my induction to the next day if my doctor wasn’t available when a room finally was. I called and left a message around 10am asking what the plan was, luckily they called back right away and a room was ready at 11:30! I tried not to let my emotions take over as I said goodbye to Maya and we gave her hugs and kisses as she played with blocks.

My dad drove us to the hospital since they needed to have our car. We checked in and I got settled into bed. IMG_9478.JPGThey let me order lunch and I told Billy he should go get food too since it might be his last chance. The hospital was so accommodating with a welcome bag full of snacks and $40 for Billy to spend at the cafeteria. While he was gone, and in-between bites of lunch, my doctor came by to break my water. Only a tiny bit came out which was the same with Maya, the head was a cork in the way! Billy returned to the room and only a couple minutes later at 1:12, I had my first contraction. Now remember, I had been having Braxton Hicks contractions for most of the month of May, but as soon as that first contraction hit I was like “Ohhhhh yeahhhhh, this is what the real ones feel like!”. While Braxton Hicks is an extreme tightening of the uterus, sometimes with cramps, the real ones are way more about the cramping sensation and I felt it all over my uterus, lower stomach and butt. There was also a lot more pressure pushing down with each one.IMG_0119

I decided to walk since that helped move things along and get my mind off the contractions with Maya’s birth. It really seems like Labor & Delivery units should have a track to walk on! I walked around the halls but there wasn’t too far to go. We were surprised at how quiet it was no screaming mama’s or babies, especially since they were at capacity! We later heard there were a lot of epidurals that day, haha! My mom arrived after about an hour of contractions which was when they were getting to be about 3 minutes apart. I knew I wanted an epidural for sure this time (last time I was going to “wait and see”). Billy urged me to ask for it sooner than later since last time I got it so late and it failed. So I requested it around 2:15pm and about 20 minutes later the anesthesiologist arrived. I had some really intense contractions during the wait and during the placement of the epidural. I squeezed Billy’s hand pretty hard and my mom put lotion on my feet. They were so nice and helpful, but I was so glad real pain management was coming! We set out a picture of Maya when she was born so I could remind myself of the end goal. I also had a necklace that was made by all my shower guests at Maya’s shower with an extra bead added that said “sister” from Maya.

As the epidural was placed, I tried to be extremely descriptive about what I was feeling so that if it failed again they could fix it! Luckily everything went perfectly and after a few more contractions it started to do its job. They give you a little button to push if you want more medicine and I think I pushed it 3 or 4 times over the next hour, I was still definitely feeling each contraction but without nearly as much pain. There were actually a few where I had to ask if I was having a contraction since they can see the whole thing on the monitor. I laid on my side since every time I went on my back I got dizzy. I also was having to blow my nose a lot during the whole labor due to the dang cold I had! I warned the nurse that I would most definitely be needing oxygen during pushing since I was so stuffed up!

About an hour after the epidural was placed my nurse checked me and I was 9cm. They called for my doctor to make sure she was out of surgery. The timing was perfect and when she arrived I was at 10cm! I remember remarking “all I had to do was lay here!”. I was so lucky to start the induction at 5cm already and to have only needed my water to be broken. Pitocin (the drug used to induce contractions) really sucks, not only do you have to drag the IV around if you want to get up, but it makes the contractions so intense and so close together to the point of overlapping. So my doctor arrived and I very quickly felt the urge to push. At first she was telling me when to push, but then I let my body take over and I was in charge. I remembered focusing too much of my push into my face and holding my breath during pushing Maya, it is so hard not to! So I tried really hard to focus the push downward. I was yelling”come out Liam!” and I was very focused on meeting my baby.

IMG_9505.JPG

After about 20 minutes of pushing, his heart rate started to fall to the 60’s. At this point I was completely focused on pushing, breathing and mostly had my eyes tightly closed. To the others in the room, this was a scary moment. They had to do an episiotomy and then at the very end had to use the vacuum to turn his head. I pushed so insanely hard at this point, I was just remembering Maya’s birth and then they threatened the vacuum at the very end I was able to use all my energy to push her out. Not this time, but it didn’t matter, Liam was OUT! He was born at 5:04pm. Billy assisted in pulling him into the world and placed our son on my chest. The NICU team had been called in due to his low heart rate but as soon as he was on me he started to howl! They quickly left and he was assessed to have an Apgar score of 8-9/10, a super healthy baby!

He cried and cried forever! My mom noted that we were speechless, but it was only because he was commanding the room with his cries! We were able to FaceTime with Maya, but she was more interested in eating berries than talking to us! As much as I wanted to hold him, I also wanted to see him and this is so hard when they are so tiny and floppy! Plus with the IV on one arm and the blood pressure cuff on the other, it is so hard to maneuver. So I had Billy hold him pretty quickly so I could see our boy.

With Maya’s pregnancy, I had so many ultrasounds and monitoring, I really wasn’t concerned at all about her well being. This pregnancy was so “normal” and low intervention that in comparison it seemed like we didn’t know anything about this baby! It was truly a relief to see how completely perfect he was. We held him for 80 minutes before they took him to clean him up and measure him.

I had guessed he was 6lbs 12oz and he was 6lbs 15oz and 20″ long. His head was 13″ circumference and I’ll have to look up what Maya’s was to see if that made a difference in needing a little more help getting him out. We let my mom go home, we all couldn’t believe she would make it back in time for dinner! As soon as we were all cleaned, stitched, bundled and packed, they wheeled me down the hall to my recovery room and my dinner arrived shortly after! Everything about the timing that day was just perfect!IMG_9583

We are so in love with our new baby boy and despite a few scary moments, overall it was a very pleasant birth experience. I had heard that second births are often half the time as the first, and that was exactly right with mine! I am so glad I went with the induction. If my labor had started at home and progressed at the same rate, it only would have taken an hour for the contractions to be excruciating. Who knows if I would have been at the park with Maya, or if Billy would have been 45 minutes away at work, or if I wouldn’t have been able to reach my dad for help with Maya… I’m just glad it all went really smoothly.  I’m also so grateful that my epidural worked this time. As I mentioned, with Maya’s birth I was going to wait and see about needing pain management. Since I really didn’t get it, I knew I wanted it this time. It just helped me so much to be in the moment and not absorbed with my pain. This is a day I want to remember every moment of, and during those insane contractions I was so closed off. Pushing is so much work and if I had been having painful contractions for hours leading up to pushing, it would have been so hard to summon the energy. So I am totally pro epidural now, it allows you to be present in one of the most amazing moments of your life.

So that’s Liam’s birth story. Pretty darn detailed, but that’s mostly for me and for him someday although I’m happy to share it here for the rest of you.

Tired, happy, sooooo in love

Liam’s First Day

Liam had a very busy first day of life! After being born yesterday evening he stayed awake to nurse, cry, poop and check out the world until 2am! He finally fell asleep without being held and we all got some much needed rest!

In the morning he had a visit from his pediatrician and my obstetrician. Then he had a very special visit from his big sister and his Grandma & Grandpa! We’ll post more pics from the camera once we are home. Maya was so sweet, she had her hands out ready to hold him and climbed up to my bed to see him right away. She was pretty fascinated by the phone in my room, but she still spent a while checking him out. It was so special to see our two babies meet!

Later in the afternoon he had a little photo shoot with the photographer here. She put the photos in a slideshow with the sappiest music which totally made me cry! We also had a visit from Great Aunt Tracie & cousin Jenna (who was delivered at the same hospital 16 1/2 years ago!).

We’re happy & healing, trying to rest as much as possible before the reality of home life tomorrow. The nurses were clear that we could go home tonight but we are enjoying the amenities and care so we’re waiting until tomorrow!

Maya’s 2nd Birthday

On Friday our sweet girl turned two. It feels a little funny now that her birthday is over. We had spent the entire month hyping her up for her party, her birthday and all that came along with it. Anyways, we had a great day and I can tell she felt very special!IMG_9405

Our day started with a free dozen mini-donuts from Pip’s Original. We started this tradition last year and why would we ever stop?IMG_7050

Billy has been working from home all week in case I went into labor. He was able to slip away for a couple hours and take Maya swimming! This was super special to swim with her Daddy and we have missed swim class so much this month! They ended up swimming for 75 minutes which is crazy since swim class was always only 30 minutes. It was a little sad to have to sit on the bench (I’m too far dilated to swim), but also fun to get to take photos and watch them together.

After swimming we hit up another birthday freebie, The Waffle Window! This is was our first time but we will definitely return (and join the birthday club for the rest of us). We got Maya a powdered sugar one and we took home savory ones for lunch. Mine was basil, Brie & bacon with peach jam and Billy’s was Hawaiian Ono chicken with a bleu cheese sauce. So yummy!IMG_7028IMG_7047

After nap, Maya was surprised by a new slide gifted from Nana & Papa! It was actually a pretty rainy day so we set it up in the playroom and I think we’ll keep it there until we have some consistently dry days. Maya loves slides and she was full of glee going down again and again. We later FaceTimed with Nana & Papa and she took the phone for a couple of slides so they could experience it!

She opened all her presents from Mommy & Daddy. Highlights were a bubble lawnmower, rhyme book, 3 puzzles and diving rings to use in the bath tub.

Grandma & Grandpa came over for dinner. We had hot dogs (of course) since Maya had still been associating “May 27” with a hot dog party despite us reminding her that it already happened! She opened her gifts from them, Hi Ho Cherry-O! board game was the hit and she played and won against Grandma Laurie. We wrapped up the festivities with homemade chocolate cupcakes and one more round of “happy birthday”.

We are so lucky to have such a sweet, grateful, funny little girl. She makes every day so much fun. This last year has been amazing watching her growth and the next is sure to be even more so. Maya has become such a smart, talkative, observant little lady and seeing her become a big sis will be incredible. IMG_7053

May 27th was a pretty rainy day, but the next day we were able to give her the big gift from Mommy & Daddy, a sandbox! She also got a really nice picnic table from her Nana & Papa complete with an umbrella. Her last gift was a doll bed from her Great Grandparents. Lucky lady!

Hot Dog Party Videos

See the last post for photos!

Last year when I picked up the balloons, Maya FLIPPED out. It was adorable and I wish I had it on video. I guess balloons aren’t quite as exciting to a 2-year old, but she was still excited.

Maya’s friend CC has a parachute and was so nice to let us borrow it for the party!

Happy Birthday on the parachute!

Hot Dog Party!

Happy Birthday time with cake!

Billy, my parents and I all collapsed in the living room after the party. Maya went back for more snacks and a little more “Happy Birthday” singing! She is such a riot!

Maya’s 2nd Birthday Party

IMG_6902

Yesterday, we celebrated Maya’s 2nd birthday with a hot dog party with her friends! We decided to have the party a couple weeks early, due to my due date, and I’m so glad it worked out! While it was pretty exhausting to setup a party, I’m so glad Maya got to have one last special day as an only child! A huge thanks to my parents for helping with all the food!

IMG_0028

This photo cracks me up because she wouldn’t put down her hot dog!

We had planned for an outdoor barbecue, but it turned out to be a miserable rainy weekend so we moved it inside. I was a little bummed because I had made all of these flags to hang in the yard and I had to cut them up to have them fit indoors. Billy had also been working so hard on making our backyard nice! The highlight of the party was probably the parachute which luckily fit in our basement play room! I also made a photo booth with a hot dog that you could put your face in, complete with ketchup & mustard.

Quite the slimming dress 😉

The hot dog bar was a lot of fun to put together. Chili dogs were definitely the favorite topping! For dessert we had homemade strawberry shortcake, one of Maya’s favorites.

IMG_9395

We started talking about the party with Maya about a month ago. She has told pretty much everyone we have met that she was having a hot dog party. She was so excited! As one of my friends said, she was radiating joy for the entire party. It was so much fun to see her so happy! We will still have a celebration on her actual birthday (with or without her brother!), but this party will always be so memorable since it was our last time totally doting on our one and only baby! Thanks so much to all of her great friends that came and for your sweet presents!

IMG_6882.JPG

In the end, it was a great success and Maya had a blast! I had kind of decided to just do birthday parties every other year for my kids since their birthdays (and mine for that matter) will be so close together. But Maya is such a party girl and she loves her friends so much, she might just get a party every year! I also vowed to keep it simple, but totally failed at that as I sat cutting out “HOT DOG” with an x-acto knife the night before the party! I just have so much fun setting up parties, especially with such a fun theme!

Maya’s First Birthday Party

IMG_8381
On Maya’s actual birthday, we hosted a party at Mt. Tabor Park for all of her friends. She was so excited for the party. When I showed her the balloons she started shrieking with joy! She flips out when she sees balloons at the grocery store so I made sure to have a bunch at her party. Billy brought her from my parents house in her new wagon and she started shrieking some more when she saw the swings and the toys outside. The cake was a yummy vanilla cake with fresh strawberry filling and real whipped cream frosting. It was so good, I just might buy it for her every year until she has a preference! On the menu was fruit, turkey, cheese and puffs – a bunch of her favorites. We brought her tunnel and fort plus had two ball pits and a bubble machine! The main attraction was of course the swings. I handmade the favors on my new sewing machine: headbands and drool scarves! It was the perfect setting for a first birthday and she loved every second of it.
IMG_8386IMG_8397
The location was at the small swing set that we visit all the time and was actually the sight of my own first birthday party (almost) 29 years ago! It was a gorgeous day and the late afternoon sun felt wonderful!
IMG_8656
No Hume party is complete without a photo booth, and it was extra silly with all the babies!
IMG_8447
Maya loved her cake and ate so much we had to take it away!

She was very sweet to share with her parents!

She got some awesome gifts from her friends! Lots of new toys and cute clothes for summer.

It was such a fun party and Maya had the greatest birthday! I’m so happy we have so many new friends to celebrate with!

One.

Our sweet little Maya turned one today. Tonight actually, she was born at 9:36pm. She was so excited for her party! As soon as I brought in the balloons from the car she just started shrieking! She spent the day surrounded by loved ones and great friends. I’ll post her party photos later.

This also marks one year of being parents. This may shock you, but I can honestly say this has been the least stressful year I have had in a long, long time. A lot of that has to do with having a very happy baby, but I also think I am doing exactly what I need to do right now, staying home with my girl.

Maya is everything I imagined and so much more. I tell her this all the time, but I’m so glad that she is who she is! That she is the baby that came out of me and not someone else. I feel so lucky to know her and to get to experience her joyful personality on a daily basis. She brings out the best in me and has made me such a happier person.

This year went fast at times (month 4-7 especially with moving and the holidays) and slow at others (birth-3 months felt like an endless summer!). But I can’t really say “I can’t believe she is one!” because she totally is! She is developing the cutest little vocabulary, she is SO close to walking and gets better every day (although is super cautious which reminds me of myself when I go skiing!), she interacts so sweetly with her friends, she is catching onto routine and knows how to check the mail, brush teeth, go to the bathroom for bath time, etc., she eats pretty much everything, and she gives kisses to Mama & Daddy all the time!

I remember crying after my wedding was over because I had put so much effort and love into the event and it was all over! I didn’t want the party to end! I feel like there has been a countdown going to when Maya would turn one, but this is still just the beginning, I’m going to spend tonight smiling at the photos & memories of the day excited for what tomorrow and the future will bring!

Happy Birthday Missy-May. I am so happy to be your Mama!

Maya’s Birthday Brunch

IMG_8276
The first celebration of Maya’s First Birthday was a lovely family brunch at Grandma Laurie & Grandpa Billy’s house. On the menu was pancakes, bacon & sausage and fresh Oregon strawberries. Maya had both sets of grandparents in attendance plus one set of great-grandparents, Aunt Tracie & good friends Eleni & Gray.
