Day 4-7

On Sunday we had a visit from my grandparents or The Greats as we have been calling them. Liam is their 2nd great grandchild. That afternoon we had a quick visit from friends Stephanie and Jackson who brought a ton of those amazing lactation cookies. Stephanie’s recipe is even better than mine was and I see a lot more cookies in my future! That evening, the Maiolino family was so sweet to bring us pizza dinner and I had my first post-pregnancy glass of wine. 10 week old Nick seemed huge in comparison to Liam! It’s crazy how quickly they grow, it was definitely a reality check to savor these first few weeks.

On Monday we had a visit from our friend Shelley and son Ashton. They bought Liam his first little fancy outfit, complete with a tie! It was great for Maya to have a friend over and to get some energy out playing with him all morning. Ashton will be a big brother in a month so it was sweet to see him with Liam. Late that afternoon we went for a walk at the Grotto which we have a membership to. It is actually a Catholic sanctuary but it has great walking paths, huge trees and beautiful grounds & view of the Columbia river. Hardly anyone was there and it was a fun family walk despite the heat. And there was still enough leftover pizza so dinner was easy!

Billy had to work on Tuesday and I wasn’t feeling quite ready to handle both kids so my dad took Maya for the morning. Liam lost his umbelical cord overnight! I was able to FaceTime with Dana & Valerie which was great to catch up and have them cyber-meet Liam. That evening we went to my parents house for dinner. It was my first time driving both kids and it started with both them screaming (Liam hates the car seat and Maya seriously wanted to drive!). Billy met us over there and after nursing Liam I was able to run out quickly to Target and get Liam and I outfits for our family photos the next day. I had tried on shirts last month and tried to suck in (haha) but both the shirts I bought looked awful so I needed something new. I had had a hard time finding anything for a baby boy to wear but lucked out with a onesie with a little bow-tie. Girl photo accessories are so much easier! Just change the headband! We had a great salmon dinner and it was fun to have Liam see his grandparents. Unfortunately Maya didn’t fall asleep until 10pm for the 3rd night in a row!

Today, Billy was back home and we had our family photo shoot. My aunt Tracie was sweet enough to come over to help wrangle Maya during the photos that she wasn’t in. It was definitely hectic but I’m hopeful we got some good photos of both the family and newborn shots of Liam. Three out of four of us were exhausted, but Maya decided to skip her nap which always makes for a very hard evening. Maya helped Liam do tummy time which was pretty cute. At least bedtime happened on time but she was so overtired and cranky. Liam seems to be having his first growth spurt so I know it was hard for her that I’m nursing constantly and can’t pick her up or run around with her.

So one week down! Liam’s awake times are increasing everyday and it’s been so fun staring into those blue eyes and getting to know this little guy. He still looks exactly like Maya when he’s sleeping, but awake he is totally his own guy. Maya has my brown round eyes and Liam’s are just like Billy’s, set further apart, longer and thinner and (currently) blue. It’s been a little stressful when both kids are crying at the same time and I know it’s hard on Maya to hear “just a second” all day long. Dinner time seems to be when everything kind of breaks down and Liam wants to nurse the second everything is ready. But we’re figuring it out and for the most part everyone has been happy!

Liam’s First Day

Liam had a very busy first day of life! After being born yesterday evening he stayed awake to nurse, cry, poop and check out the world until 2am! He finally fell asleep without being held and we all got some much needed rest!

In the morning he had a visit from his pediatrician and my obstetrician. Then he had a very special visit from his big sister and his Grandma & Grandpa! We’ll post more pics from the camera once we are home. Maya was so sweet, she had her hands out ready to hold him and climbed up to my bed to see him right away. She was pretty fascinated by the phone in my room, but she still spent a while checking him out. It was so special to see our two babies meet!

Later in the afternoon he had a little photo shoot with the photographer here. She put the photos in a slideshow with the sappiest music which totally made me cry! We also had a visit from Great Aunt Tracie & cousin Jenna (who was delivered at the same hospital 16 1/2 years ago!).

We’re happy & healing, trying to rest as much as possible before the reality of home life tomorrow. The nurses were clear that we could go home tonight but we are enjoying the amenities and care so we’re waiting until tomorrow!

Maya’s 2nd Birthday

On Friday our sweet girl turned two. It feels a little funny now that her birthday is over. We had spent the entire month hyping her up for her party, her birthday and all that came along with it. Anyways, we had a great day and I can tell she felt very special!IMG_9405

Our day started with a free dozen mini-donuts from Pip’s Original. We started this tradition last year and why would we ever stop?IMG_7050

Billy has been working from home all week in case I went into labor. He was able to slip away for a couple hours and take Maya swimming! This was super special to swim with her Daddy and we have missed swim class so much this month! They ended up swimming for 75 minutes which is crazy since swim class was always only 30 minutes. It was a little sad to have to sit on the bench (I’m too far dilated to swim), but also fun to get to take photos and watch them together.

After swimming we hit up another birthday freebie, The Waffle Window! This is was our first time but we will definitely return (and join the birthday club for the rest of us). We got Maya a powdered sugar one and we took home savory ones for lunch. Mine was basil, Brie & bacon with peach jam and Billy’s was Hawaiian Ono chicken with a bleu cheese sauce. So yummy!IMG_7028IMG_7047

After nap, Maya was surprised by a new slide gifted from Nana & Papa! It was actually a pretty rainy day so we set it up in the playroom and I think we’ll keep it there until we have some consistently dry days. Maya loves slides and she was full of glee going down again and again. We later FaceTimed with Nana & Papa and she took the phone for a couple of slides so they could experience it!

She opened all her presents from Mommy & Daddy. Highlights were a bubble lawnmower, rhyme book, 3 puzzles and diving rings to use in the bath tub.

Grandma & Grandpa came over for dinner. We had hot dogs (of course) since Maya had still been associating “May 27” with a hot dog party despite us reminding her that it already happened! She opened her gifts from them, Hi Ho Cherry-O! board game was the hit and she played and won against Grandma Laurie. We wrapped up the festivities with homemade chocolate cupcakes and one more round of “happy birthday”.

We are so lucky to have such a sweet, grateful, funny little girl. She makes every day so much fun. This last year has been amazing watching her growth and the next is sure to be even more so. Maya has become such a smart, talkative, observant little lady and seeing her become a big sis will be incredible. IMG_7053

May 27th was a pretty rainy day, but the next day we were able to give her the big gift from Mommy & Daddy, a sandbox! She also got a really nice picnic table from her Nana & Papa complete with an umbrella. Her last gift was a doll bed from her Great Grandparents. Lucky lady!

Family Shower

My family threw us a lovely baby shower this last weekend. It was hosted at Aunt Tracie & Uncle Jeff’s house. My cousin Jenna & my mom facilitated some great games and my dad made my favorite Thai beef skewers. The food was potluck style and everything paired wonderfully. Thanks to all my family that attended and for your lovely gifts!

It’s pretty wild having my due date be only a day different than Maya’s  (her’s was 6/2, his is 6/1). It has caused me to constantly compare this pregnancy to the last because I remember how I felt at certain times of the year. For instance, Maya started kicking like crazy on New Year’s Day, but it took another week to feel her brother. I was reading back through some of my blog posts and I mentioned that week 35-37 were really hard, this was totally true again (although it’s still hard at 37.5 weeks, so hopefully it gets easier!). There was also a heatwave this same week in Long Beach and we totally had one this week in Portland. I actually found myself wearing the same dress today as I wore 2 years ago (thanks for the memory, TimeHop)!

2014: Hanging out with Valerie, 2016: With Maya

My outfit options are pretty limited at this point. Maternity clothes are such a joke, you are supposed to buy your normal size but then they get so tight towards the end. I prefer my hot weather clothes like dresses or skirts, but not the hot weather! It’s supposed to be cool again next week but I think I’ve maxed out my maternity jeans at this point. I might just need to make every day a pajama day!

One of the reasons last weekend was so hard (not including having a ton of contractions!) was that at this point in Maya’s pregnancy I had just quit my job. This time around I don’t get this big weight off my shoulders or any special time to relax and nest. Life just keeps chugging on!

P.S. Another funny thing happened regarding that same dress this week: My amazing cousin Kelsey is still in the PeaceCorps in The Gambia, but she just took a trip to Italy and Spain and her luggage was lost in between!

So I was reminded of the cruise we took to Mexico back in 2010 when her luggage ended up on a different ship! I’m pretty sure she didn’t get it back until the trip was over! So I lent her a bunch of clothes on that cruise including that same silly dress!

!

And then, yesterday Maya randomly pulled out my photo album from that same trip and I told her how Kelsey lost her clothes and she was so interested in this. I ended up filming her talking about it. I guess the dress was on my mind when I picked out my clothes today!

Maya’s Birthday Brunch

IMG_8276
The first celebration of Maya’s First Birthday was a lovely family brunch at Grandma Laurie & Grandpa Billy’s house. On the menu was pancakes, bacon & sausage and fresh Oregon strawberries. Maya had both sets of grandparents in attendance plus one set of great-grandparents, Aunt Tracie & good friends Eleni & Gray.

Valentine Fun

We went on our first Hike It Baby walk last week. It was Valentine themed and most of the moms and babies dressed up. We met at a playground and then walked to a food cart pod, it was a lot of fun and a HUGE turnout! I hope they do another one for St. Patty’s day!
